I was hesitant to walk into Argias. As an Italian spot with formal dining I wasn't sure this was the best place for a wandering explorer looking for his next beer. But as soon as I walked in my worries disappeared. This place was a pleasant surprise and the specials were pretty great too.
As most of my stories begin, the bartendress greeted me and told me about the Happy Hour specials (Monday-Friday, 4pm-7pm) which included $3 Stellas or Bud Light (um, interesting pricing strategy) $3 seasonal beer (which I don't think they had), $1 off martinis, $4 rail drinks, and $5 house wine. I opted for the Stella.
I thought that was all I was going to get, a decent but not overwhelming happy hour, until the bartendress showed me the food specials. The appetizers (fried calamari, meatball sliders, mussles argia, avancine, fried chese ravioli) were only 5 bucks! Bam! Oh shucks, I'm not eating on this quest.
I liked the ambiance of the place. The bar area is much bigger than you would think, with about 14 or so bar stools. The place is very clean, not dingy like typical bars, and has high ceilings. It just felt kind of relaxing. Plus, I didn't have any problem with free breadsticks on the bar counter, which was a nice touch.
Since this was only my first time there I'm not sure if this is always the case but the music was noticeably good. Good classic rock without getting too rock. Lots of songs I found myself singing along too from Pink Floyd to the Beatles to Tom Petty.
Argia's has some other daily specials as well including Sunday's all-you-can-eat spaghetti ($17), Monday's 1/2 priced wine, Tuesday's trivia night with prizes (7:30pm), Wednesday's $9 Mussels ($15 regular price), and Thursday's $10 pizza & half off cocktails (5pm-9pm). They even have a 10% discount on food if you are going to a show at State Theater that day (with ticket).
I finished up my Stella and walked out the door knowing I'd probably be coming back again very soon.
